According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Colombia accepted all conditions Trump proposed that encompass accepting deported Colombian migrants without delays or restrictions. Leavitt explained this agreement will keep the pending tariffs and sanctions for Colombia in reserve while preserving them only if the country does not fulfill its obligations.
The immigration restrictions along with intensified cargo screenings applying to Colombian arrivals will persist until the country handles its first batch of deported Colombians safely. A statement from Colombia's Foreign Ministry declared that the process to resolve differences with the U.S. government had succeeded while ensuring harsh treatment of deportees who return to the country with full respect for their citizen rights.
Under the orders of Colombian President Gustavo Petro the government decided to send the national presidential plane to transport deported nationals scheduled to arrive at the start of the day on these deportation flights. Trump introduced trade barriers through tariffs and sanctions on Sunday after Colombia refused entry to two U.S. deportation flights but Petro chose to block all flights through Sunday's social media announcement. Petro stated that the ban included American military aircraft yet allowed civilian transport planes that carried deportation passengers.
During his administration Trump executed multiple trade restrictions against Colombia.
Sunday morning Trump took to his Truth Social account to disclose he would start an emergency 25% trade tax on everything Colombia exported which would exceed 50% in a week's time. Trump ordered his administration to close U.S. borders to Colombian government personnel together with their Allies and Supporters while beginning immediate removal of visas and official sanctions against all Party Members and their family members and government backers. The US president announced that Customs and Border Protection would perform "enhanced" inspections on all Colombian nationals as well as Colombian goods while imposing treasury and banking sanctions against the country. He declared Colombia’s refusal of these flights exposed both the United States to national security threats and public safety hazards in his post.
The boldness of Colombia's planned response against American actions underwent scrutiny.
Petro responded swiftly to Trump's tariff announcement with a doubling down strategy including a 25% tariff on US imports while instructing his government to shift the country's exports toward all nations except the US. Although Petro admitted his tariffs would increase U.S. prices he pledged Colombian government assistance for domestic replacement options. In a later post on X, Petro directly lashed out at Trump saying: Our freedom doesn't work for you which is perfectly fine as we value our independence. I deny shaking hands with white slave holding ownership types. The president told him that Trump has placed a tariff of 50% on the labor-created products that Colombia sends to the United States before introducing a similar restriction.
What To Watch For
Luis Gilberto Murillo will depart for Washington soon alongside his country’s U.S. ambassador Daniel Garcia-Pena. According to Murillo and his team they plan to conduct high-level meetings to track down agreements stemming from today's cooperation between governments.
These events announce worldwide that Americans finally get the respect they deserve. President Trump has vowed to maintain strong protection of our nation's borders while demanding complete cooperation from foreign governments regarding sending back their illegal residents in the United States,” Leavitt's statement made clear.
Trump's plan to remove undocumented immigrants receives diverse opinions from governments around the world. Both Guatemala agreed to accept deported individuals through its military planes and Mexico declared it would welcome all Mexicans home even thoughexact policies regarding non-Mexican immigrants remain unclear. A reported flight deportation event faced a Mexico landing ban last week until White House officials resolved what they described as “administrative issues.”
Earlier this month Honduran President Xiomara Castro threatened to remove U.S. military personnel from their Honduran base while Honduran government officials suggested last week that Trump's deportation policies might lead to closer ties between Honduras and China.
The White House started deportation operations following Thursday's arrest of 538 individuals and their subsequent transport of "illegal immigrant criminals" home. Under Donald Trump's direction these deportation flights support his mission to conduct "the largest deportation operation in U.S. history."
The mission started after Trump issued executive orders shortly after taking office which instructed various agencies to enforce stricter immigration rules. The Trump administration through ICE and Border Patrol agents commands them to deport unauthorized border crossers as a priority while the government anticipates broad-scale deportation actions in urban centers.
